NOTE:  Photo identification is required to gain admission to the Martin V. B. Bostetter, Jr., U. S. Courthouse, in Alexandria.  Except as provided for in General Order No. 12-1, concerning electronic devices, items prohibited from the courthouse include weapons (firearms of any type, as well as knives), cameras, tape recorders, pagers, cell phones and other personal communication devices.

Inclement Weather

In the event of inclement weather, the Alexandria Division of the U.S. Bankruptcy Court, Eastern District of Virginia, follows the operating status of the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM),  with respect to  federal agencies in the Washington, D. C. area.

  • If OPM announces that the executive branch of the federal government is closed, the courthouse will be closed.
  • If OPM announces that the executive branch of the federal government is on a delayed opening, the courthouse will open to the public at 10:00 a.m. and all court proceedings scheduled to begin before or at 10:00 a.m. will begin at 11:00 a.m.
  • Information regarding OPM closure and delayed opening decisions are announced on local radio and television stations, and can be found at https://www.opm.gov/.

Important Security Information

Visitors enter the courthouse through the building’s main entrance on Prince Street. You will be required to walk through a magnetometer and your bags will be screened by an x-ray machine. You will be required to show a photo ID issued by a government agency, such as a driver’s license. Members of the public are prohibited from bringing cell phones, pagers, PDAs, laptop computers, cameras, tape recorders, and all other personal electronic devices into the courthouse. There are no lockers available to store these items while you visit the building.

Attorneys who require laptops for their courtroom presentations must receive prior approval from a judge.

PERSONAL ELECTRONICS DEVICE POLICY – EFFECTIVE 4/4/2016

The request form attached to the Personal Electronics Device Policy, and linked here here as a PDF-fillable request form, should be completed, as indicated on the request form. Once completed, the request form should be attached to an e-mail as a PDF file, and transmitted, via e-mail, by the requesting attorney, to the appropriate bankruptcy judge’s chambers, as follows:
